We love when clients think outside of the box when it comes to the look and feel of their wedding day. One of our first real challenges with this concept has to be Keiko + Matt’s wedding at Axis Pioneer Square. They wanted to create a design concept inspired by their urban venue to “feel like our loft apartment in NYC”. They wanted their guests to feel comfortable, but also for the overall feel of the event feel like they were inviting all of their friends to their home– a place they’d like to be!

When Keiko told me she was wearing a white velvet dress, I knew it was going to be gorgeous, but I was blown away when I saw her. She looked so timeless. With no fuss or flash, the understated gown shown all on its own, complete with a stunning open back cowl-back drape.

I love the locations their photographer, Carina Skrobecki took them. It perfectly lined up with their “concrete jungle, NYC loft” vibe they were hoping to channel.

With this in mind, we took it and ran with it! Already feeling like an old NYC loft with exposed brick, the venue, Axis lent itself so effortlessly in this way!

From Venue to Urban Loft
When guests entered, we made a sprawling welcome table that was styled to look like a coffee table in their home, with books, pictures, and of course, a globe, as an homage to the venue itself! I loved the crafted wooden table form Vintage Ambiance we used against the brick! In contrast, we used acrylic and wooden signage to marry the industriousness of the “loft”. I love how it turned out!

We utilized all of the built in shelving behind the huge bar and their infamous “globe wall” as the “bookshelves” in their home! We filled them with things Keiko + Matt would’ve had at their home, such as books, plants, candles, and trinkets from their travels, including a globe here and there!

Besides the globe wall, my other favorite decor element we brought in was a cozy mid-century lounge that Keiko + Matt hand-picked! We loved the leather tufted sofa from Vintage Ambiance, and built our lounge around it and the super cool cowhide rug imported from Brazil. In an effort to also make this feel like the seating area in their own home, we added books and of a plant as the coffee table centerpiece.

Urban “Outdoor” Ceremony
In an effort to capture the “concrete jungle” vibe in the ceremony, we dreamt up stringing crawling vines across strands of bistro lights, and using an industrial copper pipe ceremony arch with crawling vines. It all came together beautifully and really set the urban chic feel to the rest of the day.

Dinner ‘Al Fresco’
Dinner was through the triplet brick arches of Axis, back in the north room where the room was transformed from ceremony to dinner. We left the string lights across the room, to give it a more intimate, bistro feel that you’d enjoy if you were eating al fresco in NYC. With food being another key player in the festivities, Keiko + Matt opted for classic candlelight.

We hope you feel inspired to think outside the box when it comes to your wedding, like Keiko + Matt did!

Until next time!
